Duncan Robinson, Pistons Reportedly Agree to $48M Contract After Heat Sign-and-Trade
Duncan Robinson's time with the Miami Heat has come to an end after seven seasons.
Per ESPN's Shams Charania, the sharpshooter signed a three-year, $48 million deal with the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday. According to Charania, the deal is a sign-and-trade that sends Simone Fontecchio to Miami.
Robinson exercised his early termination option and became a free agent earlier this offseason, bypassing his $19.9 million partially guaranteed salary for the 2025-26 season.
Charania reported that the move would allow Robinson to either find a long-term deal with the Heat or explore his options in free agency. Ultimately, he chose the latter.
After opting out, the Pistons quickly became a possible suitor for Robinson. NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer reported earlier this week that Detroit had been pursuing Robinson.
Robinson has been a success story for the Heat. He went undrafted out of Michigan in 2018 and started his career in the G League, but quickly found a place on Miami's roster. A breakout season in 2019-20 saw him average 13.5 points on 44.6 percent from deep, establishing himself as a mainstay of the lineup.
While he hasn't made the jump to become an All-Star-caliber player, Robinson has consistently been one of the best shooters in the league. He has a career three-point percentage of 39.7 and has made the eighth-most threes since the 2019-20 season.
Last season, Robinson put up 11 points per game and hit 39.3 percent of his shots from deep.
Robinson fills a major hole for the Pistons after they lost some key perimeter shooting with Tim Hardaway Jr.'s departure for the Denver Nuggets. Hardaway averaged 11 points on 36.8 percent from deep last year.
The Pistons are on the rise, making the playoffs last season for the first time since 2019 and winning their first playoff game since 2008. Led by star Cade Cunningham, it's clear Detroit has the chance to compete for years to come.
Robinson will look to help lead the team to even more playoff success this season.
