Juan Soto, Mets Hold Players-Only Meeting After Losing 2 Games to Pirates

Scott PolacekJun 29, 2025

As the New York Mets continue to struggle, the players are reportedly taking matters into their own hands.

Mike Puma of the New York Post reported the Mets held a players-only meeting in the clubhouse following Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates after dropping the first two contests in the series.

To say things have not gone well of late for the Mets would be an understatement.

It seemed like they were cruising to a postseason spot after adding Juan Soto this offseason and jumping out to a 45-24 start on the campaign. However, they lost seven in a row following that start and are just 3-12 in their last 15 games.

Two consecutive blowout losses by a combined score of 18-3 to a 34-50 Pirates team that didn't even start ace Paul Skenes in either one seemed to be a low point, and the players responded with the meeting.

"Collectively as a group, we decided to start talking to each other and that's what good teams do," Francisco Lindor said, per SNY. "We all rely on each other, we all bounce ideas from each other and yeah this is a big team thing."

New York will miss Skenes in Sunday's game as well, so it represents an opportunity to respond to the meeting and at least get things somewhat back on track before a difficult stretch with two straight series against contenders in the Milwaukee Brewers and New York Yankees.

The Yankees series at home will be under the spotlight in part because of the presence of Soto, who played for the Bronx Bombers last season before joining the Mets in the offseason.

His power has been a bright spot for the National League East team, as he is slashing .259/.394/.508 with 20 home runs and 47 RBI. He has six home runs in his last eight games and has helped keep the offense afloat even as the team around him struggles to get wins.

Fortunately for the Mets, they are still just a half-game behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the division race thanks to their strong start. There is also plenty of time in the long season to turn things around despite the recent issues.

Perhaps this players-only meeting will jumpstart one of those turn-arounds in the coming days.
