Islanders Reportedly Engaged in Noah Dobson Trade Discussions with Canadiens, Blues

Zach BacharJun 26, 2025

The New York Islanders are engaged in trade discussions involving defenseman Noah Dobson, according to Chris Johnston of The Athletic.

Per Johnston, the Montreal Canadians and St. Louis Blues are among the "number of teams" with interest in the 25-year-old.

Dobson will be a restricted free agent during the 2025 offseason after spending the first six years of his career with the Islanders.

He carried a $4 million cap hit during his 2024-25 campaign, the final season of a three-year contract worth $12 million that he signed in 2022.

New York "explored" a potential extension with Dobson before discussing trades with other teams, per Johnston.

Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche told reporters Tuesday that he was still attempting to reach a contract agreement with the defenseman's representatives.

"I’ve been talking with the agents. It’s all just part of the process,” Darche said when asked about Dobson, via Ethan Sears of the New York Post. “Sometimes it takes time, sometimes it happens quick and it’s been, actually, with all four of the RFAs, it’s been a very cordial negotiation. We’re just going through the process. We all have our ideas of where the contracts will be and we’re working through it.”

Dobson recorded 10 goals and 29 assists in 71 games throughout the 2024-25 season, but he's just one year removed from a 2023-24 season in which he amassed 70 points and finished No. 8 in Norris Trophy voting.

He could provide a boost to Blues and Canadiens teams that are both looking to build upon first-round playoff exits in 2025.
