J.D. Martinez Reportedly Has Non-Guaranteed MLB Contract Offer from Rangers
Veteran slugger J.D. Martinez has received a non-guaranteed contract offer from the Texas Rangers as he navigates through free agency, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Martinez appeared in 120 games with the New York Mets during the team's 2024 campaign, but wasn't signed as a free agent ahead of the 2025 season.
The 37-year-old didn't seem to be preparing for a potential retirement, though.
On April 10, Heyman reported that Martinez was "hitting and staying ready while waiting for a job."
The six-time All-Star recorded 16 home runs and 69 RBIs with the Mets last season while slashing .235/.320/.406. Martinez struggled down the stretch of the year, hitting just .168 to go along with a .557 OPS over his final 30 games of the regular season.
Still, he's just one year removed from his last All-Star appearance as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Martinez racked up 33 homers and 103 RBIs with Los Angeles during the 2023 season.
He could serve as a depth piece on a Rangers lineup that has been hit hard by injuries lately.
Left fielder Wyatt Langford, who leads Texas with 13 home runs in 2025, missed Wednesday's win over the Baltimore Orioles due to left side tightness.
On Saturday, the Rangers placed first baseman Jake Burger on the 10-day injured list with a strained left oblique. Burger's 10 homers rank No. 2 on the team.
As Texas looks to stay afloat in the American League postseason picture, the team has reportedly offered Martinez a deal.
