2025 NBA Draft Scouting Report for Utah Jazz No. 18 Pick Walter Clayton Jr.

B/R NBA StaffJun 25, 2025

The Utah Jazz have acquired Walter Clayton Jr. after the Washington Wizards traded the No. 18 pick in the 2025 NBA draft.

Clayton delivered one of the greatest individual seasons in Florida history, breaking the school’s single-season scoring record with 713 points and leading the Gators to a national title.

He was named Final Four Most Outstanding Player and earned consensus first-team All-America honors from the AP, NABC, Sporting News and USBWA.

Clayton was also a semifinalist for the Naismith Player of the Year, awarded annually to the top player in college basketball, and a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, given to the nation's top point guard.

When it comes to one of his greatest strengths, Clayton hit 210 career threes—the 10th-most in Florida history—including 117 in 2024–25, the second-most by a Gator in a single season.

Clayton is also one of the draft's most polished shotmakers, with deep range, pull-up craft and a strong track record in high-pressure moments.

Still, Clayton lacks standout physical tools or athleticism, which affects his finishing and limits his ability to create mismatches. There's also his size and likely low assist rate, which complicate his projection as a full-time lead guard.

Of course, Clayton is a highly touted prospect for a reason. His scoring instincts, shooting versatility and clutch shotmaking give him a real chance to stick, especially if he embraces the "microwave scorer" identity in a rotation role.

Clayton Jr. is ranked No. 16 on B/R NBA draft expert Jonathan Wasserman's 2025 Prospect Big Board.

Realistic Pro Comparison: Payton Pritchard

Clayton has a chance to have a Payton Pritchard-type career with his shotmaking and toughness.

It's not worth wasting time labeling either with a position. Both can play either guard spot and provide shooting firepower, tough, below-the-rim finishing and playmaking ability without great size or explosion.

Pritchard was the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year this past season at 27 years old. That's a high bar to live up to for Clayton in this comparison, but his offensive skill set will allow him to at least follow the blueprint.

Strengths

2 of 3

Shotmaking: Clayton is one of the draft's most productive and diverse shooters. With deep range and a confident pull-up game, he should be able to provide instant perimeter firepower.

Offensive Versatility: He's at his best in ball-screen situations, but he also graded as one of the most efficient off-ball scorers in this draft. Aside from his catch-and-shoot game, Clayton is very effective scoring off screens and handoffs.

Intangibles: Clayton has made a habit of hitting clutches shots and showing no memory. He's fearless and willing to make the big play in clutch situations.

Weaknesses

3 of 3
2025 NBA Draft Combine

Physical Tools/Athleticism: Clayton's size and athleticism don't create any advantages. Opposing 2-guards will have a mismatch against him, and his finishes around the rim will require some extra touch or special adjusting.

Archetype: The success rate for scorers Clayton's size aren't great when you factor in that he's unlikely to be a high-assist guard.

Defensive Projection: His defensive effort and impact were mixed. He will also offer no versatility at that end of the floor.
