Wimbledon Prize Money 2015: Updated Purse Payout for All England Club

Nate LoopJul 12, 2015

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic denied the incomparable Roger Federer what would have been one of the all-time great Grand Slam wins on Sunday in the men's championship final, winning the match in four sets, 7-6 (1), 6-7 (10), 6-4, 6-3, for his third Wimbledon title and ninth Grand Slam overall.

The match came in at just under three hours of actual playing time, not including a relatively brief rain delay. In a tense affair that featured some brilliant tennis, Federer's 35 unforced errors were a big part of his undoing. It's a disappointing—but considering his age, hardly discouraging—result for Federer, who lost to Djokovic in five sets in last year's Wimbledon final and hasn't won his favorite tournament since 2012.

"I have to say it's a big challenge playing against Roger," said Djokovic, via BBC Sport. "A lot of players of my generation have looked up to him and followed his lead."

It was a fine conclusion to two weeks of tennis at the All England Club in London. Sunday also saw the closure of many other tournament brackets, including mixed doubles, girls and boys doubles and boys singles.

Wimbledon being the prestigious tournament that it is, there was plenty of prize money to hand out to contestants. In the men's and women's singles draw, the total prize money saw an eight percent increase over last year's purse, per Wimbledon.com.

Here's a look at the purse payouts for the main draws at Wimbledon.

What's Next for the Top Seeds?

Djokovic's win as the tournament's top overall seed was matched in the women's draw by Serena Williams, who defeated up-and-coming Garbine Muguruza 6-4, 6-4 in the championship final on Saturday. Wimbledon's official Twitter account noted it's been quite some time since both No. 1 seeds took home the top prizes at the calendar year's third Grand Slam:

Much of the attention surrounding Djokovic and Williams now will focus on what these two can do at the year's final Grand Slam, the U.S. Open. The hard-court tournament in Flushing Meadows, New York is roughly six weeks away, set to begin August 31.

For Djokovic, it's a chance to cap what has been an altogether fantastic year of tennis. In 2014, the only Grand Slam he won was Wimbledon. Now, a year later, he has a chance to reach all four Grand Slam finals in 2015 and win three of them. Only the French Open, in which he lost the final in four sets to Stan Wawrinka, still eludes him in what has so far been an illustrious, magnificent career.

Djokovic has won the U.S. Open just once in his career back in 2011. He's reached the final twice since then and the semi-final last year. Considering his best Grand Slam is the hard-court Australian Open, one would think he might fare a bit better in Flushing Meadows, but that has not been the case.

For Williams, the U.S. Open merely represents a chance to yet again prove she's perhaps the most dominant athlete working today in any sport, and perhaps the greatest of all time in women's tennis. Her Wimbledon win completed the second "Serena Slam" of her career (four consecutive Slam wins). Now, she has a chance to capture all four Grand Slams in a single year and tie Steffi Graf for the most Slam wins in the Open Era at 22.

The New Yorker's Ian Crouch put Williams' dominance in some perspective after Saturday's win:

"

Williams now has as many major titles as all other active women combined. Calling her fellow players contemporaries doesn’t seem quite right at this point; they are the ones who give it their best try, the ones who force a smile while holding the smaller trophies, the ones against whom history gets made. “Don’t be sad,” Williams told Muguruza after the match, “You’ll be holding this trophy very, very soon.” Williams has to retire someday, right?

"

Williams has won the U.S. Open six times, including the last three running. Perhaps Victoria Azarenka, one of only two players to take a set from her at Wimbledon 2015, can ruin her run at history. Or maybe it will be Caroline Wozniacki, last year's other U.S. Open finalist. Muguruza appears to have the aggressive, hard-hitting game that can give Williams trouble, but she probably needs a bit more seasoning.

At 33 years old and in her current run of form, it seems the only thing that can derail her is injury (knock on wood). Then again, she won her French Open semifinal this year with the flu—move over, Michael Jordan—so perhaps even her own body can't possibly betray her at this point.

Of the two Wimbledon main-draw champions, Williams feels far more likely to pull off another Grand Slam win at the U.S. Open.
