Paige Bueckers Scores 21 as Wings Beat Sun for 3rd Win of WNBA Season
Paige Bueckers scored 21 points (16 in the first half) and dished seven assists en route to leading the Dallas Wings to an 86-83 road win over the Connecticut Sun.
Bueckers has scored 20 or more points in four of her last six games. That stretch includes a career-high 35-point outburst against the Phoenix Mercury on June 11. The former UConn star has also averaged 21.3 points in her last six games.
Bueckers also has at least two steals in eight of her last nine games.
She caught fire in the first half, shooting 7-of-11.
Bueckers hit one from mid-range early.
Later on, Bueckers withstood contact for a three-point play with 1.6 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
She stayed hot in the second, knocking down a three for a 24-15 lead.
Her pull-up jumper was pure later on, leading to Bueckers having 14 points before the five-minute mark of the second quarter.
In the third quarter, Dallas went on a 12-0 run for a 56-47 lead, but Connecticut fought all the way back and tied the game at 62 following an Aneesah Morrow two-pointer with 1:18 remaining in the frame.
Dallas took the lead on the next possession, though, courtesy of a Aziaha James two-pointer. The Wings then kept the edge for the rest of the evening.
Arike Ogunbowale hit the game's biggest shot, knocking down a three with 2:26 left for a 79-73 lead following a Bueckers bounce pass.
She then added a pair of free throws on the next possession (after Morrow made two of her own).
Saniya Rivers did hit a three for the Sun to cut the lead to 86-83 with 9.1 seconds left, but that's as close as Connecticut would get.
Elsewhere in the box score, James scored 17 points, while NaLyssa Smith added 12 points and seven rebounds. Ogunbowale scored only seven points, but she provided the offense when it mattered the most.
For Connecticut, Sun center Tina Charles led all scorers with 26 points.
With the win, Dallas now sits with a 3-11 record. The Wings have endured a rough start, but they are playing their best ball as winners of two in a row after beating the Golden State Valkyries on Tuesday.
Dallas will look to make it three straight when the Wings visit the Washington Mystics on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
