Gold Cup 2015: Group Results, Tables, Schedule After Costa Rica vs. El Salvador

Tom SunderlandJul 12, 2015

Dustin Corea struck against Costa Rica in stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 draw for El Salvador on Saturday and rejuvenate his team's hopes of mounting a 2015 Gold Cup challenge.

The United States' quest to defend their Gold Cup title is in good stead after Jurgen Klinsmann's men became the first team to qualify for the knockout stage of this year's tournament on Friday.

A 1-0 win over Haiti gave the Stars and Stripes their second win of the group phase, while Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica are among those top contenders looking to join them in the next round.

Guatemala vs. Mexico

Mexico demolished Cuba 6-0 in their Gold Cup opener to make a very promising start in their campaign, but the second-lowest ranked team in the competition don't necessarily provide a good indication of their ability.

El Tri are fortunate in that Guatemala may not put up too strong a resistance, either, and their 3-1 defeat to Trinidad and Tobago showed serious concern for their defence, according to broadcaster Paul Sarahs:

Victory over Guatemala on Sunday would all but guarantee Miguel Herrera's men their place in the next stage of the competition, and the team have a prime opportunity to boost their goal count in the process.

The win over Cuba displayed how well the team can function when playing at their most fluid, with Herrera in some disbelief regarding their FIFA world ranking of 40th:

It is somewhat bemusing to see Mexico plummet so gravely in the international pecking order, but that news may only serve as motivation for the team to lay down a marker against Guatemala.

Meanwhile, Ivan Franco Sopegno's side are under pressure to clinch their first point(s) of the competition, with defeat on Sunday likely to mean the end of their Gold Cup tournament.

Jamaica vs. El Salvador

Rodolph Austin left it late, but a 92nd-minute winner against Canada ensured Jamaica won their first game of the 2015 Gold Cup 1-0 and claimed a distinct advantage at the summit of Group B.

As South American football writer Juan Arango attests, it was a much-needed win for the Caribbean outfit, who have endured a woeful record against North American sides of late:

This Tuesday comes the test of El Salvador, Jamaica's final group game where a draw would be enough to clinch a place in the top two of the pool and automatically advance to the next round.

And while the 89th-ranked minnows may not seem like the grandest of threats, El Salvador coach Albert Roca saw his team grab a 1-1 draw against Costa Rica on Saturday to the delight of commentator Nigel Adderley:

During that fixture, La Selecta proved what a stubborn beast they have the potential to be, while Jamaica's struggle for goals against Canada may leave them susceptible to an upset.

Both teams are unbeaten thus far in their 2015 Gold Cup runs, and Tuesday's victor stands an exceedingly good chance of not only finishing among the top two, but top of Group B overall.
