LeBron James Doesn't Expect to Play in 2028 LA Olympics, 'I Don't See It Happening'

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James doesn't anticipate playing in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, per an exclusive interview with Tony Maglio of Hollywood Reporter.

"Nothing has changed," James told Maglio, who asked if there was an update on his status since he said last summer that he can't "see himself" playing in the 2028 Games.

"Where we at, man, 2025 right now? (Laughs) Nah, nothing has changed. I mean, if I had to look at it right now through a microscope, I would say that, me being able to support Team USA for the rest of my life — that’s for sure. But me actually going on and playing, I don’t see it happening.

"I’ve given everything that I have, and I will always be appreciative and loyal and dedicated to Team USA and USA Basketball."

James, who will be 43-and-a-half years old when the Olympics take place in Los Angeles, has won two gold Olympics medals (2008, 2012, 2024) and one bronze (2004) with Team USA men's basketball.

James has played 22 NBA seasons and just turned 40 last December. However, he was still tremendous this past season, averaging 24.4 points, 8.2 assists and 7.8 rebounds last year en route to All-NBA Second Team honors. James also led the Lakers to a 50-win season and the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

Of course, three years from now, it's possible James won't be playing in the NBA at all, which is understandable given his age and how long he's been in the league.

He has nothing left to prove and just accomplished a great feat by being part of the first active father-son duo in NBA history alongside his son, Lakers guard Bronny James.

After the Lakers' season ended with a first-round exit to the Minnesota Timberwolves, James answered a question (h/t ESPN's Dave McMenamin) about how much longer he may play.

"I don't know. I don't have an answer to that. Something I'll sit down with my family, my wife and my support group and kind of just talk through it and see what happens. And just have a conversation with myself on how long I want to continue to play.

"I don't know the answer to that right now, to be honest. So we'll see."

ESPN's Shams Charania reported last month on the Pat McAfee Show that James was expected to opt into his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season.

Ultimately, it seems at least possible that James won't be an active NBA player when the summer of 2028 rolls around. But regardless of whether or not he plays in the Olympics, James obviously has created a great legacy in the NBA and Summer Games regardless.
