Steelers' Aaron Rodgers 'Still Throwing the S--t Out of the Ball,' Says NFL Coach

Julia StumbaughJun 17, 2025

At least one NFL offensive coach feels Aaron Rodgers is still an elite thrower as he prepares for his 21st season in the league and his first with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"He's still throwing the s--t out of the ball, honestly," the anonymous coach told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. "He's the best quarterback they've had since (Ben Roethlisberger).

"We will see how the body holds up, but I think he's going to help them immensely."

Steelers fans got their first look at Rodgers throwing in black and gold during the team's mandatory minicamp last week.

An anonymous AFC executive meanwhile told Fowler they believe "mobility is an issue" with Rodgers ahead of his age-42 season.

"But where he helps them is with the plus arm strength and the field vision from the pocket," the executive continued. "They haven't had that. I'm not sure that will be enough, but the offense will be at least respectable."

Rodgers completed 63.0 percent of his passes last season for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions on a New York Jets team with the 29th-highest run percentage in the NFL.

The Steelers ranked fifth in run percentage last season, but offensive coordinator Arthur Smith already says he expects that to change when the team brings in Rodgers next season.

“Obviously, we didn’t bring Aaron in here and sign DK for all that money to go run the wishbone,” Smith said during minicamp, per Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “You try to play to the strengths of your team.”

Since Roethlisberger announced his retirement in January 2022, the Steelers have given starts to Kenny Pickett, Mitchell Trubisky, Mason Rudolph, Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.

The Steelers will now hope adding Rodgers to that list, pairing him up with former Seattle Seahawks wideout DK Metcalf and transitioning to a pass-first offense can help them snap a playoff win drought that dates back to January 2017.
