Jamaica vs. Canada

Jamaica held their own in their Gold Cup opener against Group B favourites Costa Rica, but it’ll be intriguing to see the Reggae Boyz’s approach when taking on Canada at what should be a vibrant BBVA Compass Stadium.

After their 2-2 draw with Los Ticos, Jamaica should be confident coming into this one. Their play in that match was effervescent, intelligent and rife with some spectacular moments. This stunning goal from Jobi McAnuff is probably the pick of any so far, per the CONCACAF Twitter feed:

On paper, they should have enough to beat the co-hosts, who toiled to a disappointing 0-0 draw with El Salvador in their first match. Canada were shut down well by the minnows and failed to inject any kind of impetus into their play; now they face the unenviable task of picking up points against the two best teams in the group.

LOS ANGELES, CA - JULY 08: Cyle Larin #21 of Canada goes down as he is fouled by Alexander Mendoza #5 of El Salvador in their CONCACAF Gold Cup Group B match at StubHub Center on July 8, 2015 in Los Angeles, California. The match ended in a 0-0 draw. (

They’ll certainly have to improve their finishing if they are going to progress. This miss from Cyle Larin during the match with El Salvador set social media ablaze, per Footy Accumulators:

The challenge for the Reggae Boyz will be dealing with a team who are likely to sit in and attempt to frustrate.

There was space to be exploited against an ambitious Costa Rica team, and Jamaica counter-attacked well. Here, they’ll have to be a little more patient in their play, but eventually the superior quality of the Caribbean team will be too much for the underwhelming co-hosts.

Prediction: Jamaica 2-0 Canada

Costa Rica will have been disappointed not to have gotten the better of a topsy-turvy clash with Jamaica, but Los Ticos have the quality to win their next two matches, starting with this one against El Salvador.

As we can see here courtesy of OptaJavier, the minnows don’t have the best defensive record when it comes to the Gold Cup:

Admittedly, there were some signs of improvement against Canada. El Salvador defended with resoluteness throughout the 90 minutes, and even though they rode their luck, as is evident from Larin’s horrendous miss, for the most part they seemed comfortable dealing with a determined but dull Canadian attack.

El Salvador were strong defensively against Canada.

Costa Rica will pose a completely different type of problem. As we can see here, they are a team that operate with a real ingenuity:

These creative skills combined with the energy and organisation Los Ticos play with should be enough to ensure they notch a comfortable win.

Along with Mexico and the United States, Costa Rica are the big favourites to win this tournament. This match, against modest opposition, is a fine opportunity for them to build some momentum with bigger challenges to come; Los Ticos will relish the occasion and run in a few goals.

Prediction: Costa Rica 4-0 El Salvador
