VJ Edgecombe Reportedly 'Prime Candidate' for 76ers in NBA Draft, Had Private Workout
The Philadelphia 76ers reportedly already have an idea of which prospect they plan to select with the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NBA draft later this month.
According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, Baylor freshman guard VJ Edgecombe visited the Sixers for a private workout last week and is considered a "prime candidate" to be drafted third overall.
The first two picks in the 2025 NBA draft are widely believed to be already set in stone, with Duke star forward Cooper Flagg going first overall to the Dallas Mavericks and Rutgers star guard Dylan Harper going to the San Antonio Spurs at No. 2. Philadelphia's selection is viewed as the point where things could get interesting.
B/R'sย Jonathan Wassermanย predicted in his latest mock draft that the Sixers would use the No. 3 pick to select Rutgers wing Ace Bailey. However, Fischer pointed out that while there's "an expectation" that Philadelphia would bring Bailey in for a workout "down the road," he's yet to hear of it officially being scheduled. Meanwhile, Edgecombe made the most of his time with the franchise.
"Edgecombe is said to have impressed with his work ethic, personality and interviews," Fischer stated. "He went to dinner with [team president Daryl Morey] and other Sixers higher-ups. Even Tyrese Maxey, sources say, flew in for the occasion. The Sixers are certainly intrigued by what type of defensive complement Edgecombe could provide their All-Star guard, sources say, in addition to his explosive upside on the offensive side of the ball."
In his lone year at Baylor, Edgecombe averaged 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.1 steals per game. Fischer noted that Philadelphia is "the only known visit" for him, and "several teams are of the belief he might only work out with Philadelphia." However, Fischer added that if he "does not fly off the board at No. 3, there is an increasing sense among rival teams that he will not slip past [the Charlotte Hornets] at No. 4."
The Hornets backcourt already features highly-touted youngsters LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller. While the team could add Edgecombe to the mix, it could also make the No. 4 pick available for a trade on the night of the draft on June 25, which is "a scenario various teams have mentioned they're preparing for," per Fischer.
The one team league executives "increasingly mention as interested in trading up for Edgecombe" is the Washington Wizards, Fischer reported. The Wizards own the Nos. 6 and 18 picks, making them viable trade partners for the Sixers or Hornets, depending on how long Edgecombe remains on the board.
