Sean McVay Says Rams Would've Had Interest in Aaron Rodgers If Stafford Didn't Return

Doric SamJun 11, 2025

The Los Angeles Rams were saved from an offseason dilemma when quarterback Matthew Stafford quickly agreed to a restructured contract to remain with the team, but it sounds like they had a backup plan in mind if he chose not to return.

During an appearance on NFL Network's Good Morning Football, Rams head coach Sean McVay revealed that the team would've had interest in pursuing veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers if it failed to retain Stafford.

"Our first priority … was let's work something out with Matthew," McVay said. "… If that wasn't able to occur, then that was definitely a conversation and possibility for us."

The Rams initially granted Stafford permission to seek a trade in February, but it took less than a week for him to agree to a restructured contract to remain in Los Angeles. The 37-year-old has spent the last four seasons with the franchise, winning the Super Bowl in 2021 and helping to lead the team to an NFC West title during the 2024 campaign.

Rodgers was one of the biggest free agents on the market after being released by the New York Jets, but it was just last week that he agreed to a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers to return for his 21st season in the NFL.

McVay made it clear that he's happy with the Rams' decision to forge ahead with Stafford, and he feels their relationship is even better as they prepare for the 2025 season.

"What I do feel really fortunate about is I think that we're closer than ever," McVay said. "When you're able to have real conversations, I think you can appreciate the love that's been built up, but also the ability to be honest with one another."
