Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Calls Out Royals' Maikel Garcia After Rough Tag on Slide

Adam WellsJun 11, 2025

The ongoing feud between Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Maikel Garcia was renewed on Tuesday night in the New York Yankees' 10-2 win over the Kansas City Royals.

Chisholm took exception to Garcia putting a tag on his head during a steal of third base in the sixth inning that knocked his helmet off.

ESPN's Jeff Passan noted television cameras caught Chisholm telling Yankees third base coach Luis Rojas: "I'm going to tell you one more time—if he tags me like that one more time, I'm going to smack the f--k out of him."

Garcia's knee also appeared to make contact with Chisholm's head. Chisholm, who was removed from the game due to neck tightness, told reporters after the game he "didn't like" the way Garcia tried to tag him when he didn't even have the ball in his glove.

When asked about Chisholm's comments to Rojas, Garcia told reporters he's "waiting for it" in reference to the threat about being smacked.

"It’s just talk," Garcia added.

The feud between Chisholm and Garcia began in Game 2 of the American League Division Series last season. Chisholm said the Royals "got lucky" with their victory in that game.

After the Yankees closed out the series in Game 4 at Kauffman Stadium, Chisholm accused Garcia of trying to injure Anthony Volpe on a slide into second base in the bottom of the sixth. Volpe also put a hard tag on Garcia on the play.

Players from both teams briefly came onto the field, but the situation toned down before any physical altercation occurred and no one was ejected.

Chisholm has continued to be booed vociferously by Royals fans since his comment about the team getting lucky in last year's postseason. He admitted after Tuesday's win to enjoying the attention from the Kansas City crowd.

"I went up to home plate today and told (Royals catcher Freddy) Fermín, 'I kind of like it,'" Chisholm said (h/t Passan). "I'm not at home, so I would rather walk up to something instead of walking up to no noise at all. I feel like on the road when road hitters come up and there's nothing going on, I feel like it's just, like, bland. Go ahead and boo me. You've giving me some music to at least walk up to."

Chisholm and the Yankees got the last laugh on Tuesday with a dominant win over Kansas City. The two teams will play the second game in their three-game series on Wednesday at 7:40 p.m. ET.
