49ers' Trent Williams Says He's 'Not Going to Retire with Some Left in the Tank'

Joseph ZuckerJun 10, 2025

For now, San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Trent Williams doesn't know when he's going to retire, and he pretty much plans to keep playing until the wheels fall off.

"I would love to play until I'm 40. I would love to make it into that special group," he told reporters Tuesday. "But if it's not in my cards, it's not in my cards. But I'm gonna do everything physically possible. I'm gonna stay engaged."

Williams said staying in the league through his 40s "is a goal of mine" and he's "definitely not going to retire with some left in the tank."

The 36-year-old's streak of 11 straight Pro Bowls and three successive All-Pro honors came to an end in 2024. An ankle injury ruled him out for San Francisco's final seven games.

Judging by how he looks this summer, a return to form could be in store.

Williams has also been proactive in finding whatever edge he can in extending his career. That includes chatting with Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James.

"When you see and talk to a guy like that who is going and doing it at the highest level we've ever seen and doesn't show any signs of slowing down, I know that it can be done," he said to ESPN's Nick Wagoner in 2024.

In the same interview, Williams acknowledged he could walk away at any time and probably earn a bust at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Still, he's determined to "finish this career as strong as I opened it up."

Considering he's signed through 2026, his performance this year could go some way toward providing some clarity on how much longer he's likely to suit up.
