John Tavares, Maple Leafs Agree to 4-Year Contract Extension Ahead of NHL Free Agency
The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Friday that they signed veteran center John Tavares to a four-year contract extension worth $4.38 million per season.
The 34-year-old had been set to hit free agency on Tuesday prior to the new deal.

Tavares is coming off one of the most productive regular seasons of his career. He ranked 12th among NHL scorers with 38 goals in 75 games.
He was then held to five goals in 13 playoff games as the Leafs once more fell short of the Eastern Conference Final.
That run continued a trend of Leafs stars excelling in the regular season but going quiet in the playoffs.
Tavares has recorded 17 goals in 51 career playoff games for the Leafs, a rate lower than Toronto would like to see from its second-line center.
Re-signing Tavares could be seen as a vote of confidence that he and Auston Matthews are a top-six center duo who can lead Toronto past the second round for the first time since 2002.
Tavares was set to hit free agency after his previous seven-year, $77 million deal with the Leafs expired following the 2024-25 season.
After leaving the New York Islanders in 2018 free agency, Tavares scored a career-high 47 goals in his first season with his hometown Leafs.
He was named the franchise's 25th captain ahead of the 2019-20 season, and he wore the C until passing on the captaincy to Matthews in 2024.
The Leafs are in for some major changes this offseason after once more falling short of the Eastern Conference Final in 2025.
One of those changes could include the departure of Mitch Marner, who is set to hit free agency next week.
Keeping Tavares, who repeatedly said during his contract year he wanted to remain in Toronto, could help the core Leafs roster retain continuity as the franchise heads into a pivotal offseason.
