Grizzlies' Zach Edey Out At Least 4 Months After Surgery for Ankle Injury

Mike ChiariJun 10, 2025

Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey could miss the start of the 2025-26 NBA season because of an ankle injury.

The Grizzlies announced Saturday that Edey re-sprained his ankle during training this week, causing excessive ligamentous laxity, which will require surgery.

The team followed up on Tuesday saying the center will be re-evaluated in four months after successful surgery:

This follows a reported from ESPN's Shams Charania, who noted Sunday that Edey is "likely" to miss the beginning of the 2025-26 campaign, which will be his second in the NBA after Memphis selected him ninth overall in the 2024 draft.

"After consulting with the Grizzlies and multiple specialists, we decided this is the best approach for Zach long-term as it gets him back to 100% with no limitations," Edey's agent, Mark Bartelstein, told Charania. "He will make a full recovery and be back better than ever."

The 23-year-old Edey appeared in 66 games as a rookie, starting 55 of them. He averaged 9.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.3 blocks and 1.0 assist per contest, while shooting 58.0 percent from the field.

Edey was named to the All-Rookie First Team, and he finished fifth in NBA Rookie of the Year voting.

The 7'4" big man from Toronto was a superstar during his collegiate days at Purdue, earning National College Player of the Year honors in both 2023 and 2024.

After missing the playoffs in 2023-24 with a 27-55 record, the Grizzlies bounced back in a big way this season, going 48-34 and returning to the postseason for the fourth time in five years.

However, Memphis was swept out of the first round by the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder, leading to questions regarding whether the front office may make some major changes during the offseason.

Most of the Grizzlies' key players are under contract, including Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr., Desmond Bane, Jaylen Wells and Edey.

With Edey in line to miss the start of next season, it could potentially give the Grizzlies an even greater sense of urgency to make a significant move via trade or free agency.
