C.J. Gardner-Johnson Disputes Fangio Saying Eagles Traded Him for Salary-Cap Reasons
C.J. Gardner-Johnson isn't buying the idea that the Philadelphia Eagles traded him to the Houston Texans because of salary-cap reasons.
He took to Instagram in response to a quote from defensive coordinator Vic Fangio saying the trade was a salary-cap move and said: "I was a test dummy for them, so now they can be like my 'scheme' work, or did my skill set make it work. I had 0 issues, ppl had issues with me. So yeah let the salary cap be the 'excuse.'"

Philadelphia traded Gardner-Johnson and a 2026 sixth-round draft pick to Houston for offensive guard Kenyon Green and a 2026 fifth-round draft pick.
It was a notable move considering the NFC East team had just signed Gardner-Johnson to a three-year, $27 million deal in 2024. That contract served as a reunion, as the defensive back also played for the Eagles in 2022 before departing for the Detroit Lions in free agency.
Like Fangio, general manager Howie Roseman told reporters the team's financial situation played a role in the trade:
"Really, when you look at our team and you look at kind of the amount of highly paid players who earned their contracts—we got eight guys who are making $15 million or more—we have from the 2022 to 2024 drafts, we have eight starters who are on the Super Bowl team, none of those guys have long-term contracts. In those drafts, probably have five or six players that will be competing for starting jobs.
"So you have a lot of players coming through that aren't under long-term contracts, plus a lot of guys who are on long-term contracts, and we never want to be in a situation where we have one year where we're getting rid of 20 guys. And we've been very fortunate to be aggressive in keeping our guys and signing guys in free agency, and it's also got to align with the draft and having young players."
While he was there for just one season in his second tenure with the team, Gardner-Johnson helped Philadelphia win a Super Bowl with 59 tackles, 12 passes defended and six interceptions.
Still, he was known for more than just his production.
Tess DeMeyer of The Athletic noted his peers voted him the league's most annoying player in the publication's anonymous NFL player poll in 2024. Given that backdrop, the defensive back's suggestion people had issues with him is notable.
The 27-year-old is now a member of Houston's secondary and will look to help lead the Texans to a Lombardi Trophy after doing so with the Eagles.
