Steelers Reportedly Unlikely to Trade for Dolphins' Jonnu Smith Amid Rodgers Rumors

Timothy RappJun 3, 2025

Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith reportedly isn't going to end up with the Pittsburgh Steelers after all, despite previous rumors to the contrary.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Tuesday that "the Steelers are not expected to trade for Smith after engaging in talks with Miami but now will host free agent Gabe Davis on a visit this week in their search for receiving help."

Pittsburgh moving on from Smith doesn't come as a huge surprise after the veteran tight end made it clear on Sunday, through his agent Drew Rosenhaus, that he wasn't looking for a change in scenery.

"Here's what I will say on behalf of my client: Jonnu would definitely like to stay in Miami. That's his first choice," Rosenhaus said on WSVN-TV, (h/t Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald). "This is where he lives in the offseason. He had a record-breaking season last year. It was the best season ever for a Miami Dolphin tight end. ... He broke the team record for receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns for a tight end and was the team's single Pro Bowl player. He's an incredibly valuable part of this team. .... He went to college at FIU. His dream team is the Dolphins."

Indeed, the 29-year-old Smith had a career year for the Dolphins in 2024, setting career highs in catches (88), receiving yards (884) and tying a career-high with eight touchdowns.

Smith is hoping for a new contract, as he's set to make just $4.8 million in 2025 in the final year of his two-year pact with the Dolphins. He skipped the team's voluntary OTA practices last week.

Pittsburgh's interest made sense on two fronts. One, offensive coordinator Arthur Smith worked with the veteran tight end in both Tennessee and Atlanta. Two, the Steelers need more playmakers in the passing game after trading George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys this offseason.

It sounds as though that help won't be coming in the form of Smith, however.
