Justin Fields Thinks He 'Can Be Great' After Jets Contract, 'Sky's The Limit' for NYJ

Paul KasabianMay 29, 2025

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields believes he "can be great" and that the "sky's the limit" for the team, per comments made to reporters after the team's fifth OTA practice on Thursday (h/t ESPN's Rich Cimini).

"I think I can be great," Fields said. "That's been the goal for me my whole life, my whole career. I think the sky's the limit for this team, for this offense, but we do have a long way to go."

Fields signed a two-year, $40 million contract last March after a season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, which followed three campaigns on the Chicago Bears.

Fields starred at Ohio State before the Chicago Bears selected him with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

In three seasons with Chicago, Fields completed 60.3 percent of his passes for 7,780 yards, 40 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. He also threw for 7.0 yards per attempt. Fields was also dominant on the ground, rushing for 2,509 yards and 19 scores, including 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns in 2022 alone.

After the 2023 season, the Bears, who held the No. 1 overall draft pick, traded Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers. They ultimately decided to use that draft choice on USC quarterback Caleb Williams, who now leads the way in Chicago.

Fields was the Steelers' QB1 for six games as Russell Wilson, who was anointed the team's starter before the season began, recovered from a calf injury. He fared well in Pittsburgh, going 4-2 while completing 65.8 percent of his passes for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. Fields also rushed for 289 yards and five touchdowns.

After the season, the Jets had an opening at quarterback after parting ways with Aaron Rodgers. New York then opted for Fields on a team-friendly deal that allows the ex-OSU star a chance to showcase his talents and potentially land a bigger contract down the road.

Fields has certainly shown flashes of brilliance in the past, although he hasn't particularly ranked well throwing the football. Over his three full seasons as a starter, Fields was 28th, 25th, 23rd in passer rating.

Perhaps a fresh start and a reunion with his ex-Ohio State teammate, wide receiver Garrett Wilson, gets him on track, though. It's certainly possible as the Jets look for a spark to land them in the playoffs for the first time since 2010.
