Steichen's comments included thoughts and prayers to the Irsay family during this difficult time. He also called Irsay a "phenomenal human being" while citing his generosity.
"A lot of you guys knew Mr. Irsay really well and covered this team for a long time," Steichen said, per NFL.com.
"I was with him for two years. Phenomenal human being. You guys know how generous he was. I told the team last week, every time I talked to him in the building, on the phone, every time. He would always tell me at the end, 'coach whatever you need for this team and this organization. We got you.' That was the man he was. … We're going to honor this season for Jim and we're going to win for Jim this year."
Irsay served as the team's general manager from 1984-1997 and then its principal owner, chairman and CEO beginning in 1997.
The Colts enjoyed great success under Irsay, making the playoffs 16 times and winning the division 10 times. Indianapolis also won the AFC twice and the Super Bowl once.
This year's team is looking to bounce back from an 8-9 season. The Colts certainly have the talent to do so, and they'll be honoring their late owner with a signature jersey patch throughout the year.
