Bengals' Ja'Marr Chase 'Not Really 100%' on Playing Flag Football in 2028 Olympics

Scott PolacekMay 27, 2025

Perhaps no position in the NFL will generate more intrigue than wide receiver when it comes to which players will participate in the flag football competition at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and Cincinnati Bengals pass-catcher Ja'Marr Chase would be an obvious candidate to represent the United States.

That is, if he wants to.

"I don't know," Chase told reporters Tuesday. "I want to hear more information about it. I want to know the timing for us, offseason, in season. I want to know if we're getting paid. I want to know where we traveling every other week or every day, like all that plays a part, because we have an offseason, we have a life. How long would that be? I don't know. There's a lot of questions to it. I think it's pretty cool, but I'm not really 100% on it yet."

While the NFL announced players will be allowed to participate, there are some who believe they shouldn't automatically receive the coveted roster spots.

Darrell Doucette III, who played quarterback for Team USA's men's national flag football team, told Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post that he would like some of the sport's current players to have the opportunity.

"This is a sport that we've played for a long time, and we feel like we are the best at it and we don't need other guys," Doucette told. "But we all have one goal in mind, and that's to represent our country. We're definitely open to all competition. If those guys come in and ball out and they're better than us, hats off to them. Go win that gold medal for our country."

Perhaps Chase had that in mind when he said, "We taking they love of the game, and bashing it with our love of the game. Now we taking away their love of the game and we killing them. It's a lot, bro, I think it's cool, but I just don't know if I'm 100% in on it."

Wide receivers around the league have greeted the idea of playing in the Olympics with various degrees of enthusiasm.

A.J. Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles said he will not participate in part because the Games will happen during training camp, per Zach Berman of PHLY, while Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings told ESPN's Brooke Pryor it would be a "dream" to win a gold for his country.

Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins also seemed excited:

The NFL receivers will generate the headlines at this point, but there are some current college players who also may be in position to make the Olympics by 2028. Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith and Alabama's Ryan Williams immediately come to mind as arguably the top two playmakers in the country.

In fact, Williams told Bleacher Report he would "one-thousand percent" be interested in representing his country and chasing gold.

Chase isn't at that level of certainty, although he didn't rule out the possibility either.
