Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
The Colts announced on May 21 that Irsay had died at the age of 65. He succeeded his father, Robert, as the franchise's controlling owner in 1995 and remained there for the next three decades.
Before that, Robert had hired Jim to be the Colts' general manager in 1984. His record as the youngest GM in NFL history (24 years old) remains.
Irsay was front and center for one of the most consequential decisions in franchise history. Looking back, using the No. 1 overall pick in 1998 on Peyton Manning was a no-brainer. At the time, however, Ryan Leaf was considered an equally compelling prospect.
With Manning, the Colts eventually became a perennial contender and lifted their second Super Bowl title in 2006.
Irsay then helped to oversee the transition from Manning to Andrew Luck in 2012. By 2014, Indianapolis reached the AFC title game.
Beyond the team's win-loss record and playoff success, Irsay displayed a passion that set him apart from some of his peers. Nobody questioned how much he cared about the Colts and wanted them to win.
Carlie Irsay-Gordon, one of Irsay's three daughters, is widely expected to become the new voice of authority from the owner's box following his death.
