Wimbledon 2015: Results, Scores, Winners and Friday Twitter Reaction

Adam WellsJul 10, 2015

For the second consecutive year, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer will meet in the Wimbledon final after the two men won hard-fought straight-sets semifinal matchups against Richard Gasquet and Andy Murray, respectively.

Everyone will recall the Djokovic-Federer showdown from 2014, which was a five-set instant classic won by Djokovic. That will be a difficult match to replicate in terms of drama and tension, but these might be the only two players on the planet capable of pulling it off.

Before looking ahead to that sure-to-be-epic battle, let's take a look back at how Djokovic and Federer got to this point.

Federer will be the sentimental choice to win on Sunday. He's certainly not an old man fighting to remain relevant in the sport, but it's been a long time since the 33-year-old has tasted victory in a major tournament.

In fact, Federer's last triumph in one of the four big events came at Wimbledon in 2012. He's been in a major final only twice since that victory—the last two years at the All England Club.

Per ESPN Stats & Info, this will mark the third time in their careers that Djokovic and Federer are meeting in a Grand Slam final:

The gap between those first two meetings is an illustration of how much has changed in seven years. Federer was 26 and at the height of his powers in 2007, winning three of the four major events that season. Djokovic was 21 years old and a few months away from winning his first major at the 2008 Australian Open.

Age does give Federer a chance to do things no one in tennis has done for a long time, as noted by Wimbledon's official Twitter account:

For the record, Ken Rosewall lost in the 1974 final to American Jimmy Connors, who would go on to win three of the four majors that year.

The good news is that Federer seems to have a plan on how to win this time around, via Wimbledon's official Twitter account:

It's hard to question Federer coming off his impressive win over Murray, though both players put up a valiant fight.

ESPN's LZ Granderson had high praise for Federer and Murray:

There's no denying it was among the best three-set matches two top competitors could put on. The significant gap in the stats were Federer's 20 aces and 56 winners to Murray's 12 aces and 35 winners.

But both men are looking up at Djokovic, who is on another planet right now. ESPN Tennis tweeted out the evidence following his win over Gasquet:

Federer is still great, yet he has six losses in 46 ATP matches so far this year. That's nothing to sneeze at, but he's played four fewer matches and has three more losses than the world's top player.

As good as the effort was from Gasquet, he was always fighting an uphill battle against Djokovic, even before the match got started. The French star came into Friday with a 1-12 record versus Djoker, with his lone win coming in 2007.

In the end, the matchup everyone wanted to see in the final is the one we will get. With a win, Djokovic will have completed the first three steps on his way to a calendar-year Grand Slam. Federer is trying to taste victory at the major he's had more success at than all the others.
