After stealing Games 1 and 2 on the road, the Panthers returned to Sunrise with a vengeance. The Hurricanes had no answer late, crumbling in a disastrous third period as fans inside Amerant Bank Arena roared behind a potential sweep.
Fans took to social media to celebrate the dominant effort, with many calling for the brooms ahead of Game 4 on Tuesday night.
Panthers defenseman Niko Mikkola led the charge with two goals and five hits, alongside Aleksander Barkov, who also tallied two goals and one assist. Jesper Boqvist added another goal with two assists and Evan Rodrigues notched two assists in the win.
Mikkola opened the scoring midway through the first period with a slick backhander, assisted by Rodrigues and Barkov. Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky turned away seven shots in the opening frame to keep Carolina scoreless through 20 minutes.
The Hurricanes answered late in the second with a goal from Logan Stankoven, who tucked one past Bobrovsky to tie the game at 1. Goalie Pyotr Kochetkov held firm with eight saves to keep the Panthers at bay and give Carolina a fighting chance entering the third.
But Florida came out swinging.
Boqvist lit the lamp just 90 seconds into the third and Mikkola added his second goal five minutes later. Barkov followed 30 seconds later with a strike of his own to grab a 4-1 lead.
The pain for the Hurricanes didn’t stop there.
Barkov added his second goal of the night, followed shortly by a strike from Marchand as the Panthers poured it on. Despite a last-ditch effort from the Hurricanes, netting one in to grab a second goal, the Panthers already blew the door wide open, crushing any hope of a Carolina comeback.
Florida now holds all the momentum—and a golden opportunity to close out the series at home on Monday.
