Caitlin Clark Talks 'Frustrating' Liberty Loss, Says Fever Are 2 Plays from Being 4-0
Caitlin Clark addressed the Indiana Fever’s narrow 90-88 loss to the New York Liberty, calling it “frustrating” after both of the team’s losses this season came down to just two possessions.
"That's probably what's frustrating about it. … We are two possessions from being 4-0," Clark told reporters postgame. "But there were so many little areas of this game we could have improved. It definitely stings, but this is what's going to make us better at the end of the year."
Both of the Fever’s losses this season have come in dramatic fashion, with questionable officiating and costly miscues playing key roles.
Against the Liberty, the final possession proved to be the difference. Clark was smothered by Natasha Cloud just past midcourt and lost control of the ball before getting a desperation shot off at the buzzer, hoping for a foul that never came. Cloud stayed disciplined and got the clean stop.
Before Clark's late turnover, controversy swirled around two critical moments that helped swing the game in New York's favor. Cloud appeared to get away with a no-call on a contested shot attempt by Indiana's DeWanna Bonner. Moments later, Lexie Hull was whistled for a foul on New York's Sabrina Ionescu, who knocked down the two free throws that ultimately sealed the win for New York.
"I thought it was egregious, honestly. I thought it was obvious," head coach Stephanie White said of the no-call on Bonner.
She commented on the Hull foul as well, saying, "It was an offensive player veering into the defensive player's path. We have to be able to play through it. But at the same time, I feel like it's really disrespectful."
The Liberty held on to remain undefeated, while Indiana’s two losses have come by a combined three points—highlighting how close the Fever are to turning the corner.
