Marcelo Mayer Called Up By Red Sox amid Alex Bregman Injury, Set for MLB Debut
In a move that likely signals Alex Bregman is headed for the injured list due to a quad injury, the Boston Red Sox are bringing up star prospect Marcelo Mayer from Triple-A.
Per Katie Morrison-O'Day of MassLive.com, Mayer was receiving congratulatory messages from his Worcester teammates, indicating he was being called up.
Rob Bradford of WEEI and Jeff Passan of ESPN confirmed that Boston is adding Mayer to the MLB roster.
Bregman left Friday's game in the third inning after signaling to the dugout for the training staff to look at his leg following a single off Baltimore Orioles starter Cade Povich.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters before the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against Baltimore that Bregman woke up this morning with more pain, so the club sent him to get an MRI.
There has been no official update about Bregman from the club yet. It's possible the club could announce Mayer's call-up before the second game of the doubleheader at 6:35 p.m. ET.
Worcester is playing at home this weekend. The club's stadium is roughly 45 miles from Fenway Park, so Mayer could potentially be in the lineup for tonight's game. Nick Sogard got the start at third base in the opener with Bregman unavailable to play.
Mayer is the No. 2 prospect in Boston's farm system and eight-ranked prospect overall, per MLB.com.
The 22-year-old was selected with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2021 MLB draft. He has had a steady rise through the minors, spending all of 2024 in Double-A and starting this season in Triple-A.
In 43 games with Worcester, Mayer is hitting .271/.347/.471 with nine homers in 170 at-bats. He has primarily played shortstop, but was also used at second and third base this season.
