Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez Led Inter Miami Players-Only Meeting Amid Team's Struggles
After Inter Miami's 3-0 defeat to Orlando City last Sunday, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez led a players-only meeting for the club to hash out its issues after losing five of seven matches.
Felipe Cardenas of The Athletic delivered the news on Inter Miami, which is sixth in the 15-team Eastern Conference standings with 22 points (six wins, four draws and three losses).
The team's performance has been particularly dreary of late, with a 4-1 loss to Minnesota United FC, a 3-3 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes and the aforementioned 3-0 defeat to Orlando.
Inter Miami's defense has clearly fallen apart over the past few months, but the team's scoring has been inconsistent as well. Ultimately, Inter Miami is simply experiencing a period of poor form, one year after finishing atop the Eastern Conference table with 74 points.
Last season ended with a bitterly disappointing loss to Atlanta United in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. Inter Miami started the 2025 MLS season well enough but has since won just two of eight MLS matches.
The good news is that Messi and company have 21 more regular-season matches, so there's plenty of time for Inter Miami to figure things out. The season certainly looks bleak at the moment, but the talent is obviously there for Inter Miami to return to being top of the table.
The bad news is Inter Miami has a tough match Saturday on the road against Philadelphia Union, which is tied for first in the Eastern Conference with FC Cincinnati. So Inter Miami obviously hopes the players-only meeting turns things around, but a stiff test awaits to see if that bears immediate fruit.
