Arkansas' Sam Pittman Rips CFB Spring Transfer Portal, Says You Get 'Shook Down Twice'

Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman is entering his sixth year at the helm, but the shifting college football landscape is still creating some frustration.

In an interview with Pete Nakos of On3.com, Pittman spoke out against the spring transfer portal window, which creates more uncertainty as next season approaches.

"For the life of me, I can’t understand how we would have a portal after spring football," Pittman said. "I can’t understand that in spring football, when you’re trying to figure out what your team’s going to look like. You’ve lost this senior, you’ve lost this guy in the portal. You’ve done this, you’ve done that. Let’s see who’s going to replace who, and what our team’s going to look like. And then after spring ball, we have another portal."

He continued: "At the end of spring ball, you should know who’s on your team. And, 'Oh, man, we’re not very good at X position.' Well, that’s just how it is. You can’t get somebody else. That’s your team. I’m not speaking for every coach, but I believe there are a lot of coaches out there who would agree with me. The second portal, you’re getting shook down twice."

The 10-day spring transfer portal window was open from April 16-25. The Razorbacks lost seven players and brought in eight newcomers.

Nakos noted that coaches proposed to move the spring transfer portal to a 10-day window in early January after bowl games during the American Football Coaches Association convention in Charlotte earlier this year.

Pittman also told Nakos that he plans to bring up the issue during the SEC spring meetings next week, so perhaps he could help institute a change that other coaches surely would welcome.
