Inside Brock Purdy, 49ers' Reported Contract Talks as QB Didn't Want It to Get 'Ugly'
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy reportedly didn't want his relationship with the team to get "ugly" this offseason, according to Albert Breer of SI.com, as the two sides negotiated the five-year, $265 million extension he ultimately signed.
But both sides had some important conditions in those talks.
Per Breer, "In the first meeting, the Niners got their point across that they werenât going to break records with the contract. At the second meeting, in Indy, it was established that Purdy's side wasnât going to do a deal that didn't have strong cashflow, structure and guarantees, things that would affirm that he was San Francisco's guy for the foreseeable future."

The deal was still a massive one despite not being a record-breaking pact. Purdy will receive $165 million in new money over the first three added years in the extension, $181 million in fully guaranteed money and, perhaps most importantly, a no-trade clause.
So unless the Niners cut Purdy somewhere down the line, the two sides are now joined at the hip through the 2030 season. The 2023 Pro Bowler and 2022 seventh-round pick has been a gem of a find for San Francisco, but now he's being paid like a top quarterback, and the expectation is that he'll consistently perform like one over the duration of this new deal.
