Netflix Reportedly Wants to Add More NFL Games Beyond Christmas Schedule
NFL games aired on Netflix for the first time ever during the 2024 season and will do so again with a doubleheader on Christmas Day 2025.
But that could be just the start of NFL games on the streaming platform.
During an appearance on The Town with Matthew Belloni (h/t Ben Axelrod of Awful Announcing), CNBC's Alex Sherman discussed a conversation he had with Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos and revealed Netflix was looking for more games.
"I spoke to Ted Sarandos. He admitted to me, like, 'Yeah, I talked to Roger Goodell on the side about adding even more games beyond our two Christmas games,'" Sherman said. "'We just need to figure out a way to eventize these games.'"
Sherman also added, "Maybe the NFL works with Netflix and gives them a package of 15 games that they can figure out how to eventize."
Netflix certainly did its best to make the Christmas Day games in 2024 feel like marquee events.
Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in a showdown between two high-profile AFC teams, while the Baltimore Ravens' victory over the Houston Texans included a halftime performance from Beyoncé in her hometown of Houston.
According to a Netflix press release, those contests are the two most streamed NFL games in U.S. history.
This year's Christmas Day doubleheader on Netflix pits the Dallas Cowboys against the Washington Commanders at 1 p.m. ET and the Detroit Lions against the Minnesota Vikings at 4:30 p.m. ET.
Those could be critical games in the respective NFC East and NFC North division races, as only the Cowboys didn't make the playoffs last season from that group of four. And Dallas is known as America's Team and will surely generate a massive audience even if it isn't living up to expectations with Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens.
With Thursday games streaming on Prime Video, playoff games streaming on Peacock and Netflix hosting another Christmas Day doubleheader, there is a sense of inevitably when it comes to the NFL expanding its streaming presence.
And Netflix reportedly wants to be a player in that expansion.
