Red Sox's Kristian Campbell Working Out At 1B Amid Casas Injury, Per Alex Cora
The Boston Red Sox may have a different in-house solution to fill their vacant first base role.
Ahead of the Red Sox's home series against the Atlanta Braves, rookie infielder Kristian Campbell was seen taking reps at first base. This comes after designated hitter Rafael Devers said he would not be open to moving to the position.

Yankees Call Up 6'7" Prospect 📈
Red Sox Manager said that the team is "looking for options" at the position and wanted to "see how it looks" for Campbell at first base.
“Yep, looking for options," Cora said, per Ian Browne of MLB.com. "Obviously, we’re getting Romy, probably at the end of the week, early next week. But, you know, just introducing him to first base and see how it looks. That’s where we’re at.”
The position became available after incumbent first baseman Tristan Casas went down with a ruptured patellar tendon. He is out for the season.
Campbell entered the season as the Red Sox No. 2 prospect and made the team's opening day lineup. He is currently hitting .246/.337/408 with five home runs and 15 RBIs. He had an excellent April, hitting .301 and winning the AL Rookie of the Month for his efforts.
He has played the majority of his games at second base but has filled in at center field and left field. He had played shortstop, third base and right field but has never played first base at the professional or collegiate levels.
Despite the lack of experience, a transition to first could open up the door for current No. 2 prospect Marcelo Mayer to move to the majors to play second base or shortstop. If the Red Sox instead chose to move a player like Gonzales, David Hamilton or Ceddane Rafaela to second, No. 1 prospect Roman Anthony could instead get the call-up to play outfield.
While first base may not end up being Campbell's long-term position, him shifting there could help the roster inject some young talent and help the team improve on its 22-23 record.
