Red Sox's Triston Casas Out for MLB Season After Undergoing Surgery on Knee Injury

Zach BacharMay 4, 2025

Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas was ruled out for the rest of the 2025 season after undergoing a procedure to repair a ruptured tendon in his left knee.

Casas suffered the injury while running to first after hitting a slow roller up the first-base line in the second inning of Boston's 6-1 win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday. He fell awkwardly and was carted off the field before he was eventually hospitalized.

"He did an outstanding job in the offseason to put himself in that situation," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said, via the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). "It didn't start the way he wanted it to. He was going to play and play a lot. Now we've got to focus on the rehab after the surgery and hopefully get him back stronger than ever and ready to go next year."

Casas was drafted by Boston with a first-round pick in 2018 and established himself as a key piece of the team's lineup in 2023, hitting .263 with 24 home runs and 65 RBIs to go along with an impressive .856 OPS.

He finished No. 3 in 2023 American League Rookie of the Year voting.

Casas' batting average and OPS dipped to .241 and .800 in 2024, respectively. It's worth noting that he only appeared in 63 games, missing extended time due to torn cartilage in his left rib cage.

He was still finding his rhythm at the plate to open his 2025 campaign, recording three home runs and 11 RBIs with a .182/.277/.303 slash line in 29 appearances.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow discussed Casas' impact after his latest injury.

"He certainly struggled through the first month of the season but that didn't change what we believe his production was capable of being," Breslow said, via ESPN. "It's a big loss. In addition to what we think we were going to get on the offensive side, he was kind of like a stabilizing presence on the defensive side of the field -- also a big personality and a big part of the clubhouse."

The Red Sox called up veteran infielder Abraham Toro from Triple-A Worcester on Saturday, and he's expected to split time with Romy Gonzalez at first base to replace Casas.
