Red Sox's Rafael Devers Won't Play 1B After Triston Casas' Season-Ending Injury

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora says he doesn't plan to speak with Rafael Devers about replacing Triston Casas at first base, according to MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo.

Casas is out for the remainder of the 2025 season after undergoing surgery on his left knee.

The Red Sox are currently set to platoon Romy Gonzalez and Abraham Toro at first base until the club can find a long-term replacement for Casas.

Devers said in February that he wanted to remain at third base and wouldn't play designated hitter, but was ultimately bumped to DH by the offseason signing of Alex Bregman.

“From my end right now, no. We asked him to do something in spring training. In the beginning, he didn't agree with it, and now he's very comfortable doing what he's doing,” Cora said about Devers' position switch, per MLB.com's Ian Browne. “So like I told you guys in spring training, he’s my DH.”

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, meanwhile, said that slotting in a top Red Sox prospect like Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer at first base isn't in the club's plans, per Browne.

The Red Sox announced Sunday that Casas had suffered a ruptured patellar tendon during a Friday win over the Minnesota Twins.

Casas, who was limited to 63 games in 2023 after suffering torn cartilage in his rib cage, had batted .182 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in his first 29 games of the 2024 season.

Prior to Casas' injury, Breslow was asked on WEEI's Greg Hill Show if Boston was considering a potential replacement at first base after Casas' relatively slow start to the season.

"I think we’ve seen some signs from Triston that things could be trending in the right direction over the last week and a half or so," Breslow answered.

Casas' injury has taken the decision out of Breslow's hands. The club could now consider calling up a prospect and moving another player to first base, completing a trade, or potentially targeting still-unsigned veteran Anthony Rizzo in order to fill in for their injured infielder.
