Daniel Robert was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move.
The news comes two days after Nola allowed a career-high 12 hits and a career-high nine runs in 3.2 innings of a Wednesday loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Nola told reporters the ankle sprain was a "non-baseball related" injury.
"It's frustrating. Hadn't been on the IL in a long time," Nola said Friday, per 6 ABC's Jason Dumas. "That's how I go about everything, I try to be as healthy as possible, so I can prepared and make my starts every single time I'm given the baseball.
Nola continued, "Non-baseball related, just trying to do the similar stuff that I usually do the day before starts and during the week. Just kind of a freak thing, just happened to come down on it."
Manager Rob Thomson meanwhile said he didn't think Nola's absence would be "much longer" than 15 days (h/t Metro Philly's Shaun Nestor.)
Nola had a shaky start to the 2025 season, struggling with pitch velocity as he averaged 6.43 earned runs and went 0-5 through his first five starts.
He bounced back with two strong outings against the Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks, then allowed four earned runs in 5.0 innings against the Cleveland Guardians.
Most recently came Nola's his career-worst start against the Cardinals, where he became the first Phillies starter since Jon Lieber in 2006 to allow 13 hits, nine runs and three homers in a game (h/t MLB.com's Todd Zolecki.)
The Phillies have opened the season with a 25-18 record. Nola has recorded the loss in seven of those 18 defeats.
When asked if he was concerned about Nola's season start after the loss to the Cardinals, Thomson told reporters (h/t The Athletic's Matt Gelb): “No. Because I think he’ll find it. You got to trust he’s going to find it. He’s going to work at it, that’s for sure. And he’s going to figure it out."
Nola has pitched 1,671 innings, good for the ninth-most in franchise history, over 11 seasons with the Phillies. This will be his first time on the IL since 2017.
Nola's next start was slated for the Phillies' upcoming series against the Colorado Rockies. Mick Abel will make his first MLB start against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, and Taijuan Walker will re-enter the rotation against the Rockies, per The Athletic's Matt Gelb.
Robert, who was traded from the Texas Rangers to the Phillies on April 30, made his Phillies debut by coming in with two outs in the ninth inning of Wednesday's loss.
