Juan Soto Says He Has No Regrets About Mets Contract, 'We Have an Unbelievable Team'

Andrew PetersMay 16, 2025

As Juan Soto prepares for his first Subway Series as a member of the New York Mets rather than the New York Yankees, the star said he's still content with his decision to leave the Bronx for Queens this offseason.

"No, no. I made a decision, and I'm happy that I made it," Soto told the New York Post (h/t ESPN). "You look around. We have an unbelievable team. And it's going to be a good team for a long time."

Soto had the best season of his career with the Yankees a year ago, hitting 41 home runs and knocking in 109 RBI while helping the team reach the World Series for the first time since 2009.

Despite his success in pinstripes, he opted to sign with the Yankees' crosstown rival on a 15-year, $765 million contract that set the record for the largest deal in professional sports history. He turned down a 16-year, $760 million offer from the Yankees.

Soto's departure from the Bronx upset many Yankees fans, so when he returns to his former home stadium this week, he likely won't get a warm welcome. He's prepared for what will be a hostile series.

"It's going to be 50,000 against one," Soto said. "They're going to try to get on me, you know. It's part of it. Whatever they do, they have a right to do it."

Soto had just three home runs through March and April, but he's since started to find his groove with five homers and eight RBI in his last 12 games. He'll look to stay hot against his former team this week.

So far, the move hasn't hurt the Yankees too much. They're sitting at 25-18 on the year thanks to MVP-caliber play from Aaron Judge and some additional depth they were able to add with the money they saved by not signing Soto. Both teams sit atop their respective divisions heading into the Subway Series, which begins Friday.
