Dak Prescott 'Excited' About George Pickens Trade, Hypes Cowboys' 2025 Offense

Mike ChiariMay 14, 2025

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott expressed a positive outlook Wednesday regarding the recent addition of wide receiver George Pickens.

Speaking on 96.7 The Ticket (h/t ESPN's Todd Archer), Prescott said the following about Pickens and the Dallas offense as a whole:

"You put the football anywhere in his vicinity, very strong hands. More than a 50/50 catcher. He thinks it's his ball when it's in the air. I'm excited for him. I know that we need some help at that position. I know CeeDee [Lamb] needs some help and I think when you have a guy like that—I heard George say it—it's hard to double team two guys.

"Then you got other guys whether it be [Jake Ferguson], Jalen Tolbert, [Jonathan] Mingo, guys who have had reps and know how to get open in the league, I think we're putting together a nice group of weapons."

The Cowboys acquired Pickens and a 2027 sixth-round draft pick from the Pittsburgh Steelers last week in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick.

Originally a second-round draft pick by the Steelers in 2022, Pickens is set to enter a contract year in 2025, giving him plenty of incentive to produce.

Over his three seasons in Pittsburgh, Pickens recorded 174 receptions for 2,841 yards and 12 touchdowns in 48 games. That included a career-high 63 catches for 1,140 yards and five scores in 2023, and 59 grabs for 900 yards and three touchdowns last season.

The 24-year-old wideout will be the clear No. 2 option for Prescott behind Lamb, who is a four-time Pro Bowler and has reached the 1,000-yard receiving mark in each of the past four seasons.

After making three straight playoff appearances and winning the NFC East in both 2021 and 2023, things went south for the Cowboys last season.

They went 7-10 and missed the playoffs, and the offense took a big step backward, ranking 21st in scoring after leading the league in points in 2023.

Prescott missing nine games due to a hamstring injury undoubtedly played a role in the decline, as Dallas had to turn to Cooper Rush and Trey Lance at quarterback.

However, even before the injury, Prescott was not playing up to his usual standards, as he completed 64.7 percent of his passes for 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions in eight games.

It was a disappointing follow-up to the career year Prescott enjoyed in 2023 when he finished second in NFL MVP voting after throwing for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns and nine picks.

There is plenty of hope for a rebound this season, though, as Pickens and Lamb form one of the most dynamic wide receiver duos in the league.

Dallas' biggest question mark on offense may be the running game, as Rico Dowdle signed with the Carolina Panthers in free agency, leaving the Cowboys with veterans Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders in the backfield, along with rookie fifth-round pick Jaydon Blue and seventh-round pick Phil Mafah.

The Cowboys will also have to navigate life after Zack Martin, as the nine-time Pro Bowl and seven-time First Team All-Pro guard retired this offseason.

Dallas selected Alabama guard Tyler Booker with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft as Martin's likely replacement.
