Yankees' Oswaldo Cabrera Put on IL with Fractured Ankle Injury After Exit in Ambulance
The New York Yankees will be without third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera for the immediate future after they placed him on the 10-day injured list with a fractured ankle, per Andrew Destin of the Associated Press.
Destin noted the Yankees reinstated infielder DJ LeMahieu from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move on Tuesday.
Cabrera suffered the injury when sliding into home plate during Monday's game against the Seattle Mariners and was taken from the field in an ambulance.
It was an awkward slide as he reached back for home while scoring on an Aaron Judge sacrifice fly.
"He cares for everybody in this room. He loves being a Yankee," Judge said. "He wears his jersey with pride. This is a tough one, especially a guy that's grinded his whole life and finally got an opportunity to be our everyday guy and been excelling at it."
Cabrera's run was the final one in New York's 11-5 victory.
This is his fourth season with the Bronx Bombers, and he was off to a solid start while slashing .243/.322/.308 with one home run and 11 RBI in 34 games. He appeared in 108 games for the American League East club last season and finished with career-high marks of eight home runs and 36 RBI.
The Yankees can at least take solace knowing LeMahieu is set to return.
The veteran has not played a game this season after foot and hip injuries limited him to 67 games in 2024. He then suffered a calf injury in Spring Training that prevented him from starting the 2025 campaign healthy.
Yet he has been on a rehab assignment since April 22 and has played for Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
"The stuff I've been watching has been really good," manager Aaron Boone said of the rehab assignment, per Josh Kirshenbaum of MLB.com. "So good at using the whole field. I feel like he's really been good at that. It's still the buildup, a veteran player wanting to check boxes and do certain things within a game, and I feel like he's done a good job of that. I'm looking forward to seeing him get here with us."
His presence will help the team make up for the loss of Cabrera.
