Giannis Reportedly 'Open-Minded About Exploring' Trade for '1st Time in' Bucks Career

Scott PolacekMay 12, 2025

The biggest story of the NBA's upcoming offseason may be Giannis Antetokounmpo's future with the only NBA team he has ever known, and he is reportedly "open-minded" about at least looking into leaving the Milwaukee Bucks.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Monday that the nine-time All-Star "has not made any firm decisions on his Bucks future." However, he added that "for the first time in his career, Antetokounmpo is open-minded about exploring whether his best long-term fit is remaining in Milwaukee or playing elsewhere."

With that as the backdrop, his representatives, Giorgios Panou and Alex Saratsis, plan to meet with the Bucks to discuss his future this offseason.

"Teams have approached the Bucks frequently over the years about the availability of Antetokounmpo as a normal exercise, and are expected to ramp up due diligence during combine week, according to league sources," Charania added.

"But any conversations surrounding the perennial All-NBA superstar and 2021 NBA champion start primarily with where he believes his long-term future lies, and whether there is a franchise outside of Milwaukee that is sensible for him."

Even if Antetokounmpo does leave Milwaukee this offseason, he has firmly entrenched himself as a Bucks legend.

The 2013 first-round pick's resume includes the 2021 championship, the 2021 NBA Finals MVP, two league MVPs, a Defensive Player of the Year, eight All-NBA selections, five All-Defensive selections and nine All-Star Game nods.

He has shown nothing but loyalty to this point and signed maximum extensions to stay in Milwaukee in both 2020 and 2023. That leaves him under contract through 2026-27 with a $62.8 million player option for 2027-28, but Charania noted this summer represents "a potential crossroads in his career in Milwaukee."

Not only have the Bucks been eliminated in the first round in three consecutive seasons, but Damian Lillard could miss the 2025-26 campaign because of the torn Achilles he suffered in the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Brook Lopez, Bobby Portis (player option), Taurean Prince, Kevin Porter Jr. (player option), Pat Connaughton (player option) and Gary Trent Jr. could all hit free agency this offseason. Past trades for Jrue Holiday and Lillard have also left the team's "resources depleted," per Charania.

"This offseason, however, represents incredible challenges to the Bucks' ability to elevate the roster due to lacking high-valued tradeable contracts, having a limited amount of picks due to those acquisitions, and dealing with top-heavy salaries," he explained.

Milwaukee can't even trade multiple first-round picks to improve its immediate outlook, as it doesn't have control over its own first-rounder until 2031.

That all leads to a situation where the Bucks may be a step behind the other top contenders in the Eastern Conference next season even if Antetokounmpo does stay. He seemingly recognizes that, which could push him to seek out an exit plan in the pursuit of the second ring of his career.

Along those lines, Kelly Iko and Sam Amick of The Athletic reported Monday that the Houston Rockets see trading for the Bucks star as "intriguing."

Houston finished with the second-best record in the Western Conference, but it seemed to be a piece or two away from title contention during its first-round loss to the Golden State Warriors.

As difficult as moving a player of Antetokounmpo's caliber to the Rockets or another contender may be for the Milwaukee front office to sell to the fans, it may be the best option for the Bucks to completely reset and start building toward the future as well.

Their win-now push in recent years did result in the 2021 championship and a number of successful seasons, but the immediate future is certainly in question. Trading the future Hall of Famer could at least allow Milwaukee to restock its draft picks and acquire younger talent in what is shaping up to be a critical offseason.
