According to TMZ, "a final report in the case is expected to be released once toxicology results return."
TMZ Sports and Blake Arthur of Palm Spring's KESQ-TV previously reported that Elway had been driving at the time of the accident.
ESPN reported that Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco said Sperbeck was "standing on the back of the golf cart before he fell."
Bianco told the Denver Post's Luca Evans that Sperbeck's death "appears to be a horrific accident."
Bianco said the sheriff's department had not found any problems with the golf cart or evidence that Elway was intoxicated, according to Evans. He told ESPN that Elway had sounded "articulate" and "very concerned" when calling 911 after the accident.
Sperbeck began working with Elway when the quarterback was playing for the Denver Broncos in 1990. The two had worked together on multiple business ventures following Elway's playing career.
Elway said in a statement that he was "absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent."
