Nick Chubb 'Increasingly Unlikely' to Return to Browns on New Contract, Says GM Berry
Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry threw a wet blanket on a potential reunion with running back Nick Chubb.
Berry said Friday on 92.3 The Fan that signing Chubb is "probably increasingly unlikely." He added the Browns "have two young guys that we like" in rookies Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson:
Chubb missed the start of last season while recovering from the torn MCL and ACL injury he suffered in 2023. He then broke his foot in December and missed Cleveland's final three games.
When healthy, the four-time Pro Bowler also performed below his usual standard. He averaged 3.3 yards per carry, a far cry from his career average of 5.1.
The fact Chubb remains unsigned speaks for itself, and it's hard to see a place for him in Cleveland's backfield following the 2025 draft.
In Chubb's absence, Jerome Ford ran for 565 yards and three touchdowns last season. The jury is still out on whether he's a legitimate No. 1 option, but he has at least proven to be effective in a secondary role.
The Browns also see bright futures ahead for Judkins and Sampson, whom they selected in the second and fourth rounds of this year's draft, respectively.
The running game will presumably be a focal point for Cleveland this year given its uncertainty at quarterback. There should be enough touches for Ford, Judkins and Sampson to all get meaningful playing time.
A four-headed attack would get pretty crowded, especially since Chubb needs to rebuild his value on the field. That makes the Browns no longer a good fit for him.
