Anthony Stolarz Out for Maple Leafs vs. Panthers After Hospitalization for Head Injury

Julia StumbaughMay 7, 2025

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz will not play against the Florida Panthers in Wednesday night's Game 2 of the 2025 Eastern Conference semifinals after suffering a head injury in Monday's Game 1.

Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube told reporters on Wednesday morning that Stolarz is "fine" and "recovering" after he was hospitalized following a collision with Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett, per TSN's Pierre LeBrun.

Joseph Woll will start Game 2, while Matt Murray will serve as backup. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. ET in Toronto.

Berube declined to give a timeline as to Stolarz's return, according to ESPN's Kirsten Shilton.

Stolarz was pulled from the game after Bennett's forearm appeared to collide with his head as the Panthers forward skated through the top of the crease.

Stolarz also had his mask knocked off earlier in the game on a shot from Panthers forward Sam Reinhart.

The netminder briefly remained in the game after the Bennett hit, but appeared to vomit in the Leafs' bench area before exiting.

Before Monday's game ended, Stolarz was stretchered out of the Leafs' dressing room and taken to the hospital in an ambulance, according to Sportsnet's Luke Fox.

LeBrun reported on Tuesday morning that Stolarz was out of the hospital. He was later seen at the Leafs' practice facility, per ESPN.

Berube said on Tuesday that Stolarz was "doing well," and that he didn't yet know if the netminder would be available for Game 2 or if Stolarz had suffered a concussion.

Bennett is not expected to receive supplemental discipline outside the minor penalty he was assessed on the play, per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

Woll entered Game 1 in relief of Stolarz midway through the second period. He made 17 saves and allowed three goals, including a late tally from Bennett, but the Leafs were able to hold on to open the series with a 5-4 regulation win.

The Leafs backup was also called up to start during Toronto's 2024 playoff run. He stepped in for an injured Ilya Samsonov to help the Leafs win Games 5 and 6 of their first-round series against the Bruins, then was sidelined by his own injury during the team's Game 7 loss.

Murray, an NHL veteran who was on long-term injured reserve for the entirety of the 2023-24 season, made two appearances for the Leafs in December. He spent the majority of the 2024-25 campaign with the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals.

Dennis Hildeby, who spent most of the 2024-25 campaign with the AHL's Toronto Marlies but made six appearances for the Leafs earlier this season, was also present at the Leafs' Wednesday practice, per Shilton.
