Browns Reportedly Could Trade QB 'If Injuries Happen' Across NFL After Sanders Pick

Julia StumbaughMay 7, 2025

The Cleveland Browns may part ways with one of their four active quarterbacks before the start of the 2025 season.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, "the Browns look at the roster through the prism of value and currency, which at least one source pointed out could lead to an eventual trade if injuries happen across the league."

Fowler noted that the Browns could look to "get a pick back" in a potential trade after using up draft capital to stock the quarterback room this offseason.

Deshaun Watson re-injured his Achilles tendon in January, forcing Cleveland to find another solution under center for at least the start of the 2025 season.

The Browns signed Joe Flacco in free agency, but used draft stock to acquire the team's other three signal callers. Cleveland sent a 2025 fifth-rounder to the Philadelphia Eagles alongside Dorian Thompson-Robinson in order to acquire Kenny Pickett, then used a third-round pick to select Dillon Gabriel.

General manager Andrew Berry then traded the franchise's last two picks of the draft, No. 166 and No. 192, to the Seattle Seahawks in order to move up to No. 144 and select Shedeur Sanders.

Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot recently said on the Orange and Brown Talk podcast that Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski is looking for a quarterback who can help the team improve from its NFL-low average of 15.2 points per game last season.

“Whenever they talk about Kenny Pickett, they talk about the fact that he doesn’t throw a lot of interceptions, that he doesn’t turn the ball over very much,” Cabot said. “Joe, on the other hand, in his last, I think four starts in Indianapolis, turned it over six times or something like that.”

Cabot added that Sanders, who led the FBS with 94 sacks taken over his last two college seasons, "just takes too many negative plays, and that’s certainly what they don’t want."

The Browns will likely be looking to narrow down the quarterback room as the offseason progresses, especially if there are injuries at the position around the league. Which player wins the QB1 job heading into Week 1 could influence Cleveland's ultimate approach to the trade market this offseason.
