Game 1 of what should be a tight series between the Hurricanes and Capitals ended in overtime on Tuesday.
The two teams got off to a bit of a slow start, going scoreless through the first period.
Aliaksei Protas got things going early in the second period, finding the back of the net on the break to open up scoring and give Washington the lead.
Alex Ovechkin also set a physical tone with a big hit on Carolina's Seth Jarvis.
After a slow first two periods for the Hurricanes, they finally got on the board and tied things up halfway through the third period as Logan Stankoven found the back of the net.
Neither team managed to end the game in regulation, but there was plenty of action on the ice.
The Hurricanes needed just three minutes of overtime before ending the game with a deep shot from Jaccob Slavin.
The Canes have the early edge, but will stay in Washington for Game 2, where the Capitals will look to even things up.
Edmonton Oilers 4, Las Vegas Golden Knights 2
2 of 2
The Oilers used a late rally in Game 1 to come away with a win on the road.
Las Vegas appeared on its way to a hot offensive night after Mark Stone scored two goals in the first period.
It didn't take Edmonton long to get on the board as Corey Perry found the net later on in the first period.
After Perry's goal, both offenses went stagnant and Las Vegas entered the final period with a 2-1 lead.
Then, things started clicking for the Oilers as Leon Draisaitl scored just moments in into the third period.
After the clutch goal from Draisaitl, it appeared Edmonton wouldn't be able to get the go-ahead goal and would instead have to win in overtime. That was until Zach Hyman scored with just three minutes left in regulation.
The Golden Knights couldn't answer, and Connor Brown scored for additional insurance in the final two minutes, sealing a crucial Game 1 win for Edmonton.
