Mets' Juan Soto Says He Isn't Facing 'Any Pressure' After Historic $765M Contract

Julia StumbaughMay 1, 2025

Juan Soto says the record-breaking $765 million contract he signed with the New York Mets hasn't added any extra pressure to his 2025 season.

"What pressure? I mean, I don't have any pressure," Soto said on Thursday when asked if hitting the first Citi Field home run of his Mets career had "taken any weight" off him.

Soto continued: [Mets manager Carlos] Mendoza has been really clear with me, to make me feel comfortable going out there and playing. I don't have any pressure at all."

Soto hit two balls over the wall during a 4-2 Thursday home loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Mets sit on top of the NL East with a 21-11 record. The club led MLB with a 13-1 mark at home heading into Wednesday before dropping two straight games to the Dbacks at home.

Soto had one of his most productive games as a member of the Mets on Thursday, starting out by hitting his first Citi Field home run off Zac Gallen in the sixth inning.

Soto hit another home run in nearly the same direction in the eighth inning off Kevin Ginkel.

The Mets were ultimately unable to capitalize on a chance to tie the game with one out and two runners in scoring position later that inning.

Soto has hit five home runs through his first 32 games as a member of the Mets. He is batting .252 with a .822 OPS, below his career regular-season averages of .284 BA and .948 OPS.

Those numbers dropped in part due to an uncharacteristic lack of power hitting. Heading into Wednesday, Soto had recorded just five extra-base hits and three home runs heading into the Dbacks series.

Mets owner Steve Cohen said Monday on the New York Post's The Show podcast (h/t SNY's Danny Abriano) he was "not worried" about Soto's relatively slow start to the 2025 season.

"If you ask him, he'd probably say it's not going as what he hoped," Cohen said, per Abriano. "That's not what the back of his baseball card would say. But saying that, there's a lot of subtle things that he does that I really think matters. The way that he works the count, makes pitchers throw extra pitches, really matters."

Cohen concluded: "I'm not worried about Juan. He's singularly focused on baseball. He's a pure hitter. Let's have this discussion at the end of the year."

The Mets will now hope Soto's two-homer outing is a sign he's about to celebrate his new deal with a breakout in Queens.
