Jimmy Butler Says 'Playoff Jimmy' is 'a Facade' but Will 'Do Anything to F--king Win'

Timothy RappApr 28, 2025

Jimmy Butler has earned the moniker of Playoff Jimmy over the years, regularly rising to the occasion in the postseason, even if he thinks that idea is a bit overblown.

"Man, I think it's a facade that people have created over the years," he told ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk. "I know what I'm capable of. I can tell you that. And I love it because everybody thinks I just take it up a notch and I don't really just take it up a notch. I just might have the ball a little bit more. I might be a tad more aggressive, looking to score. [But] you're talking about somebody that's going to do anything to f--king win. That's some motherf--ker right there. The person that they deemed as [Playoff Jimmy], he'll die out there. He really will. It's scary. He really will die out there."

The numbers speak for themselves. During the regular season, Butler has averaged 18.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.6 steals per game during his career, shooting 47.2 percent from the field and 32.8 percent from the field.

But in the playoffs, those averages jump to 21.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.7 steals per game, shooting 46 percent from the field and 34.8 percent from three. In last year's postseason, he put up 26.9 points per game; the year before, it was 27.4 points per contest.

To this point, it hasn't led to a title for Playoff Jimmy. But with Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors, he likely has his best shot.

"The exciting thing is Jimmy gives us the opportunity to extend this thing by a couple of years," head coach Steve Kerr told Youngmisuk. "He's that good. He's also the kind of athlete who's going to age well because he's not relying on explosive leaping ability. It's more savvy and strength, and he's such a smart player. So, I think we're going to be really good for the next few years. But Steph's right, these next few years are the last round."
