Deion Sanders' Instant Reaction to Saints Drafting Shough over Shedeur Shown in Video

Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback and University of Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders was seemingly in disbelief when the New Orleans Saints passed on his son, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, with the No. 40 overall pick in the second round of the 2025 NFL draft on Friday night.

In a video posted by Well Off Media on YouTube (beginning at the 14-minute mark), Sanders shook his head and said, "Wow," multiple times when the Saints opted to take Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough instead of Shedeur:

While Shedeur sliding out of the first round was a surprise to many, it came as an even bigger shock Friday when he was not picked in the second or third round either.

During the first round of the draft on Thursday night, Miami quarterback Cam Ward went first overall to the Tennessee Titans as expected, which began the discussion regarding how long Sanders would have to wait to hear his name called.

Once the Pittsburgh Steelers passed on him at No. 21 overall, it seemed like a real possibility that he could fall out of the first round, although several teams picking early in the second round had the chance to trade back into the first to take a quarterback.

The New York Giants did precisely that by moving up from No. 34 to No. 25, but rather than taking Sanders, they selected Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart.

Since there were whispers entering the night that the Giants preferred Dart over Sanders, it wasn't a huge surprise when New York made that move.

However, the Saints decision to take Shough over Sanders in the second round sent shockwaves through the football world and portended an even steeper slide for the former Colorado star.

Shough was essentially a journeyman college quarterback, spending time at Oregon, Texas Tech and Louisville over the course of seven seasons.

He missed significant time due to injuries, but finally stayed healthy and put it all together last season, completing 62.7 percent of his passes for 3,195 yards, 23 touchdowns and six interceptions.

While Shough has good size, arm strength and mobility, he will turn 26 early in his rookie season, so him going ahead of the 23-year-old Sanders raised some eyebrows.

If that wasn't astonishing enough, two more quarterbacks went in the third round with the Seattle Seahawks taking Alabama's Jalen Milroe 92nd overall and the Cleveland Browns taking Oregon's Dillon Gabriel 94th overall.

Throughout the pre-draft process, there was no indication that Shough, Milroe or Gabriel were anywhere near Sanders in terms of ranking, especially after Sanders won Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year last season by virtue of completing 74.0 percent of his passes for 4,134 yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

However, there reportedly were some concerns about Sanders' attitude in the weeks and months leading up to the draft.

NFL insider Josina Anderson reported that an anonymous NFL quarterbacks coach thought Sanders came across as "brash" and "arrogant" during pre-draft interviews.

Additionally, NFL draft insider Todd McShay reported that some teams felt Sanders did not take a "professional approach" to the interviews.

Whatever the reason, five quarterbacks were taken ahead of Sanders over the first two days of the draft, and he was still available entering Day 3.
