Donovan Mitchell Hailed by NBA Fans for Clutch Play as Cavs Earn Game 2 Win vs. Heat
The Cleveland Cavaliers are two wins away from a quick trip to the second round.
Cleveland survived a Miami Heat challenge to come away with a 121-112 victory in Wednesday's Game 2 of its first-round playoff series at Rocket Arena. The Eastern Conference's top seed took care of business in the first two games at home and lead 2-0.
While Miami came storming back in the fourth quarter, Donovan Mitchell put on his superhero cape in the fourth quarter with eight straight points in the final three minutes to keep the challengers at bay.
He finished with 30 points, six assists and six rebounds behind 7-of-10 shooting from deep. Throw in Evan Mobley (20 points and six rebounds) and Darius Garland (21 points and nine assists) playing well in secondary roles, and the Cavaliers had enough to outlast 33 points from Tyler Herro.
Social media had plenty of love for Mitchell:
The Cavaliers built a commanding 17-point halftime lead behind an avalanche of three-pointers, four of which came from Max Strus. De'Andre Hunter and Sam Merrill also found their strokes from deep off the bench, and the home team seemed to be on cruise control.
So many players contributing took some of the onus off Garland and Mitchell, and they shifted into more of distributor roles at times as a result.
Herro was the only thing that kept the Heat within striking distance in that first half, which was important because he didn't receive the same level of help from the supporting cast that the Cavaliers backcourt did throughout a dominant start to the game.
To Miami's credit, it didn't go away in the second half even when Mobley got in on the perimeter fun by stretching his game beyond the arc and Mitchell hit a couple quick three-pointers early in the fourth quarter.ย
While Haywood Highsmith outside shooting was important, it was the Davion Mitchell show for extended stretches in the fourth quarter. He connected from the outside, attacked the lane and played solid defense while providing Herro with some of that important support that was missing early in the game.ย
It swung the pressure firmly to Cleveland's side, and the top seed responded by putting the game in the hands of its star.
It was the right decision, and Mitchell made sure the Cavaliers took a 2-0 lead into Saturday's Game 3 in Miami.
