Luka's Camp, Nico Harrison's 'Frigid Dynamic' Reportedly Factored Into Lakers Trade
The relationship between the camp of superstar Luka Dončić and Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison reportedly played a part in the team's decision to trade him.
According to ESPN's Tim MacMahon, the "frigid dynamic" between both sides "factored" into the Mavericks' choice to move Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 2.
Dallas received a package that included Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round draft pick in return.
Former Mavericks employees that served as confidants of Dončić were viewed as "enablers" by Harrison despite receiving "immense respect" throughout the rest of the NBA, per MacMahon.
This included former athletic performance director Jeremy Holsopple, manual therapist Casey Spangler and director of health and performance Casey Smith (via MacMahon).
Dončić told ESPN's Malika Andrews that he didn't speak to Harrison on the night that he was traded and hasn't held a conversation with him since the deal was finalized.
The trade was shocking, as the 26-year-old blossomed into one of the top offensive players in the association during his tenure in Dallas. He had also just helped the Mavericks reach the NBA Finals in 2024.
Dončić has remained an elite offensive threat with the Lakers, averaging 28.2 points and 8.1 rebounds to go along with 7.5 assists per game on 43.8/37.9/79.1 shooting splits as a member of his new team.
Los Angeles clinched a playoff spot as the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference with a 50-32 record, although it currently faces a 1-0 series deficit against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
As for the Mavericks, they ended the year with a 13-20 record following the trade and were eliminated from playoff contention in the play-in tournament.
