Cavs' Donovan Mitchell Reacts to Tying Michael Jordan's Playoff Game 1 Scoring Record
Donovan Mitchell reacted to hitting a major milestone on Sunday by tying Michael Jordan for the most consecutive Game 1 performances with 30 or more points in the playoffs—doing so in seven straight series.
“Just setting the tone. I have to be aggressive and see how the defense reacts to me,” Mitchell told reporters after Cleveland's 121-100 win over Miami.
Jordan accomplished the feat of scoring at least 30 points in Game 1 appearances across a seven-game streak on two separate occasions during his career.
In addition to his 30 points he finished Sunday's win with four steals, four assists and five rebounds while he shot 11-of-19 from the field.
Cleveland head coach Kenny Atkinson had high praise for the 28-year-old after his standout performance, which helped secure their first win in the Eastern Conference first-round series.
"He can get in the lane and finish and he's a great shooter. Such a complete player," Atkinson told reporters. "Whatever we ask him to do, he'll do it. He never shies away when we ask him to do the dirty work."
Mitchell has consistently performed at a high level in the playoffs. Through 10 career series, he’s averaged 28.1 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Despite the strong numbers, he holds a 3-7 record in playoff series—including 1-2 with the Cavaliers.
Mitchell and the Cavaliers will continue their playoff run against the Miami Heat on Wednesday at home.
